This sounds a lot like Bug#3582, and the answer may be the same: using PAM
would be a better way of handling this, given the different implementations of
aging/expired passwords across the Unix flavors.

I've updated the mod_auth_unix docs to explicitly mention using mod_auth_pam
for this sort of situation:
